Assistant Professor - Department of Music, School of Arts & Sciences **FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT** The Department of Music at Hunter College of the City University of New York invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor of Musicology with a specialization in African American music. The successful candidate will be a dynamic scholar-teacher whose research and teaching focus on the history, theory, and cultural practice of music within Black American traditions. Areas of expertise include but are not limited to blues, concert/classical, Detroit techno, disco, funk, gospel, hip-hop, jazz, Motown, R&B, ragtime, rap, spirituals, and soul. Appointment starts Fall 2026. The Department seeks a colleague committed to advancing the study of African American music as a central component of musicological inquiry. We are especially interested in candidates whose work engages related interdisciplinary fields-such as cultural studies, ethnomusicology, feminist studies, music theory, performance studies, or sound studies, among others-and who can foster connections between academic study and New York City's vibrant musical communities. Teaching responsibilities will include introductory and upper-level undergraduate courses, graduate seminars in the candidate's area of specialization, and general education courses for non-majors. The successful candidate will contribute to the continued development of the Department's curriculum and participate in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The normal teaching load is 3/2, with generous pre-tenure release time, and the appointment begins August 28, 2026. By drawing on our central location in Manhattan, we strive to engage students in the musical vibrancy of our great city. In our performance ensembles and classes we teach students listening and analytical skills, historical context, performance practice and technique, and critical thinking. We also provide vital services to Hunter College via our many introductory music courses and our large performing ensembles. The successful candidate will perform teaching, research, and guidance duties in area(s) of expertise, and Share responsibility for committee and departmental assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions. **QUALIFICATIONS** Ph.D. in Musicology, Ethnomusicology, or a related field is required by the time of appointment, as are the ability to teach successfully, a demonstrated scholarly achievement or potential, and the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues for the good of the institution. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development. Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience within the range of $90,838 to $109,025. **_CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases.
